The LeanIn Sea Turtle Conservation Project is located on the beautiful beach of Kosgoda in the southwest of Sri Lanka, and the sea turtle base is situated right beside the beach. Sea turtles are highly migratory marine animals that need to travel thousands of kilometers each year, crossing national boundaries. However, there are widespread deadly threats to them in these sea areas, such as fishing activities, the digging of sea turtle eggs, the destruction of spawning grounds, marine pollution, climate change, and so on. Among these threats, fishing is the most serious one, and it is the main cause of the sharp decline in the global sea turtle population.
The LeanIn sea turtle base is one of the earliest established sea turtle bases in Sri Lanka, and it is committed to taking care of baby sea turtles that are injured due to local fishing activities. At the base, you can see baby sea turtles that are disabled from birth, and you can also observe five major species of sea turtles.
In Kosgoda, the volunteers dispatched by LeanIn every year have established a deep friendship with the local children. Although the teaching conditions for the children in Sri Lanka are somewhat tough, here you can see the warmest smiles and the greatest enthusiasm of the people in Sri Lanka. Teaching English can better enhance the children's competitive edge and lay a solid foundation for their future paths.
